Jaroslav Róna

Jaroslav Róna (1957) is one of the most prominent personalities of the contemporary Czech art scene. While still a student, he participated in legendary exhibitions called Confrontations (Konfrontace) and was one of the founding members of the Tvrdohlaví (‘The Stubborn’) group. Jaroslav Róna’s work combines his two main disciplines – painting and sculpture – in a perfectly functional synthesis. His works are often ironic, with quirky humour and slightly cynical exaggeration. Through painting, Róna most often takes us to his ‘inner landscapes’, which are characterised by a darkened, ghostly atmosphere. Figural depictions, both human and animal, predominate in the sculptural work, often strongly stylised, abstracted in a primitive way. Between 2005 and 2012, Jaroslav Róna was the head of the Sculpture Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
